See 1 question about Blood Queen…. On that day, the Captain of the Red Knights ceased to exist Such strong women with such fight in them.
There's a particular flavour of historical fiction, and even of Shakespeare rewrites, that hinges on making women suffer as much as possible.
Because that's "Realistic", right? I was still hoping it would not be the case with this book, after all it seems half targeted towards a YA audience, and written by a woman But one chapter later, and here we are, with Cora kidnapped and raped thrice-daily, in front of a bunch of soldiers I will spare you how this happened but the fact that we're trying to pass the circumstances as historical is beyond ridiculous , and I mean ok, I can deal with that when it's not detailed but then we get a bundle of rape, physical violence this one character just shoves a torch under her face and burns her clothes and animal cruelty cut the ear off her pony to make sure she'll comply and listen.
I was here to read a strong female character and have fun with a Shakespearean retelling. For a hot second I even thought I'd enjoy it.
But I'm not here for misery porn. View 1 comment.
An amazing, entertaining and well written book.
I like the different look to Macbeth story, the strong and well written female characters, the well described historical setting. It's the first book I read by this author and won't be the last.
It was an engrossing and interesting read. Highly recommended! Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
This was great! The type annoyed me but I got over it lol! It was fascinating to learn about the real situation that was going on in Scotland at the time of Lady Macbeth.
The characters were done well in keeping with the time period.
Apr 10, Narelle D'amico rated it really liked it. Loved this book, I really didnt know a lot about the characters before I started reading Blood Queen but I think thats what made me like it more.
Such strong women with such fight in them. Love Joannas books. On to Fire Queen.
Assolutamente consigliato! Cora MacDuff will be wedding her beloved Macbeth but on the evening before her nuptials traitors in their midst slaughter many and drive out Macbeth and his men.
Sibyll is a Dane living in York who is asked to become the wife of the heir to Scotland's throne. Both women see tragedy and joy as they strive to crown their menfolk.
This is a historical novel based on the life of the real Lady Macbeth. Once again, Courtney brings ancient history to life with her excellent writing.
Sei la regina regnate, [ I spent many months studying Macbeth in secondary school, and Lady Macbeth is portrayed by Shakespeare as being an ambitious schemer.
Those of this who are interested in Scottish history however, know that Macbeth was a strong king, whose reign was peaceful and prosperous, so I was intrigued as to what his wife Lady Macbeth was like.
Unfortunately, this novel is not the one to tell Blood Queen I enjoy historical drama, and when I saw this the real story of Lady Macbeth I had to request this book.
Unfortunately, this novel is not the one to tell me very much about her. For a start her name is Cora. It does explain in the notes at the end that the author considered her real name to be to much of a mouthful.
But Cora? In 11th century Scotland? There are horrific scenes early in the book of rape, violence, and anima cruelty.
Cora is horrifically raped and scarred. I really began to feel that I was reading a different version of Outlander. This book almost languished on my Did Not Finish shelf, but I did manage to get to the end.
The research into the back story of Alba as Scotland was known in the 11th Century is interesting. The dual story line of Cora and Sybil is also interesting but as a novel it was not what I hoped.
Thank to you the publishers and Netgalley for an advance ARC in return for an honest review. This seemed like an interesting read but I didn't realise for a while that it was based on real history as opposed to Shakespeare's play.
Is she the blood countess that history tells? Or was she a typical Royal at the time made an example of by the King?
Look at the facts not story's that have been passed down to keep people in fear of possible fictional. I used the word fact in quotes because of possible misinterpretation of Countess Bathorys take.
People love monsters. Don't they? This was a more minimalist approach to the story of one of history's most mythical human monsters.
I have heard some say that she was no more evil than other nobles of her time, and was singled out for being Protestant. There have been more opulent productions Erzsebet Bathory, such as Julie Delpy's and Juraj Jakubisko's about 10 years ago.
I thought it was pretty good, especially since it tried to personalize the children's relationship with the Countess, showing more dimensions to her than one sees in the more exploitive movies.
For a more expansive view, I recommend Delpy's and Jakubisko's films. For a human interest approach, this one worked well. This movie was just terrible.
The movie was a heap of garbage from beginning to end. We waited and waited for something interesting to happen. I'm not much on turning historical tales and "thrillers" into cute kids in jeopardy, as I almost invariably find such stories stupidly written and the acting of the cute kids not very good.
So, that I liked this enough to give it a solid 3 stars says something. If you're looking for the true history of Countess Bathory brought to life, obviously a documentary would be better.
Where it really fell apart for me was as they approached the ending, trying to ramp up the jeopardy of the cute kids with just a few too many pieces to make it "thrilling" not and then they bent their way through too much seemingly to try to get their fictional characters lined up with the historical at the end.
What did work was the acting of Isabelle Allen, who is a child actress with some real talent. The movie was officially Russian but made in that pan-national approach that's becoming more common, with casting the English actress helpful.
Given what the aristocracy was in that part of the world, sitting in an intersection for East, West, and a mix of multiple languages and cultures, it works.
However, some of the Gypsy angles including use of the word were fairly stereotypical and might not thrill the Roma, though they do end up the heroes.
The visuals and costumes are lovely even when menacing, and there's nothing over the top as far as violence or nudity and sex one scene, gratuitous but brief and shot tastefully.
So, if you want something suggestively spooky or PG Halloween kids and parents can watch, this story of Elizabeth Bathory and the children of the night is an ok choice.
I was surprised at how the movie was really carried by children actors. It's actually a fresh take on The Countess. Better than most movies and honestly on Prime a gem.
The only gripe is the accents are inconsistent. A Romanian gypsy girl that speaks perfect English?! While the Countess has a heavy accent as well as the sister if the gypsy girl.
I loved this movie though. Everyone is bad mouthing this movie, but what they are all forgetting is it was a B Rate movie, with a low budget to begin with.
That being kept in mind, it actually wasn't that bad of a movie. Could they have done better with this? Crime Library. Turner Entertainment Networks Inc.
